| HIPAA Radios 2-way radio provides an affordable and efficient link between security, transportation, housekeeping, maintenance, emergency room, and administration personel that is HIPAA compliant. Increasing regulation, higher overhead costs, and shrinking operating revenues make it tough to be in business today, and in particular, institutional healthcare. In Alabama, and presumably elsewhere, there is a perpetual requirement for maintaining operational status of the HEAR emergency radio system although there are no funds allocated for this mandate. At the same time, to continue operation of this system in a non-secure voice made almost certainly places the hospital in violation of HIPAA regulations. We can show you how to address both requirements efficiently and affordably. There are a lot of choices.......
for private wireless 2-way radio. Private wireless as you may know, involves those products that are not subject to monthly airtime charges. These systems provide the capability of communicating to a large group of people simultaneously or selectively to a particular person. Generally such systems are confined to a single plant site although wide area, even world wide networking is possible via the Internet. Some systems require an FCC license, some don't. Some are analog, some are digital. Some employ operator selected channel access, other use automatic channel selection utilizing a technology called trunking. Most operate in the UHF (450-470 MHz) band although the 800 and 900 MHz band is sometimes used.
Private radio systems predominately are based on the use of handheld portable devices although mobile, fixed station, and repeater stations are sometimes used. Our task for now is to provide a general overview to our top choice handheld radios and to assist you in either setting up a new system or cutting cost on an existing system. Let's start with the a basic handheld portable radio. The radio shown at the left is an excellent choice for use with an existing analog UHF 2-way radio system or starting a new system for administrative, maintenance, security, or transportation use. It's a brand new product, technically known as an HYT Model TC-610. We call it the Wash and Wear Radio! The TC-610 should not be used for communicating sensitive patient information but it is well suited for non-HIPAA compliant applications. A similar model, the TC-700 is available with an internal voice scrambler for HIPAA compliance (See below). The TC-610 is a top level military grade radio designed for rough use (MIL SPEC 810 rated). It is especially well suited for hospital use. You can even wash it when it's dirty! It compares very well with other commercial radios such as the Motorola CP200 or PR400, yet it costs only $308 with a 2 year factory warranty! You can learn more about the TC-610 by visiting www.falcondirect.com/specials or just giving us a call to arrange for a 30 day evaluation without cost or obligation. And, by the way, if you are concerned about maintenance, check out our Time Share Program at www.ultracareplus.com. You'll see what sets us apart from our competion. We offer great prices and the best maintenance programs available anywhere! For HIPAA compliance, the TC-700 is available with an internal voice scrambler. Additional information on the TC-700 is available at www.info4u.us/YouAsked.pdf. The TC-700 also has built in selective paging, a very useful feature for reducing noise pollution. This radio is particularly well suited for use by patient transport personnel since individual patient transporters can be called without disturbing others. The price is right - just $360 or less at special hospital discounts.
Another useful feature of the TC-700 is a digital ID system known as MDC1200. Each TC-700 can be programmed with a unique ID code that is transmitted over the air and read by any radio with MDC1200 digital ID display capability. This is a great administrative tool! Many Motorola models have MDC1200 display capability as well as the new ICOM F50V.

The ICOM F50V is the ideal administrative companion to the TC-700 since this radio is capable of displaying the MDC1200 digital ID code of any radio with the MDC1200 ID code. Additionally, the F50V is capable of sending and receiving individual alerting codes to the TC-700 or other radios equipped with 2-tone sequential signaling. This allows selective communications without disturbing others with both group and individual calling capability. Speaking of privacy - the F50V has selectable alerting capability - audible when desired, or silent vibrate when required. It even records incoming messages for later playback! Did we mention that the F50V is water submersible without damage and MIL-SPEC rated? It is, and for the surprisingly low price of just $489. More information is available at www.falcondirect.com/f50v.
It should be noted that we offer many different radio models from leading manufacturers including HYT, ICOM, Midland, Motorola, Relm/BK, Ritron, and TEKK. All of our analog radios are compatible with fixed office stations, mobiles, repeaters, access & control, and notification systems. We'll tell you more about this later. For now, our goal is to acquaint you with a few of our more popular offerings and provide links to additional information.
The ICOM F4061 is also an analog radio with a few enhancements that may be of interest. Notably, the F4061 has trunking capability. If trunking is an unfamiliar term, think of it in terms of your telephone. Residence phones may have one or more lines. If one line is busy, the caller has to manually select another line. Most business phones are powered by a switch that automatically selects an open line to make outgoing calls or selects an open line to receive incoming calls. This is called dynamic assignment and the same principal is applicable to radio systems using a trunkig channel controller (switch) and multi-channel radios capable of working with the associated controller. Additional information on trunking is available at www.usa-radio1.com/LTR_Theory_of_Operation.pdf.
Trunking simplifies operation on multi-channel radio systems. The F4061 is compatible with most existing UHF or trunking radio systems or it can be used as a conventional radio as you choose. Priced at only $459, the F4061 is essentially feature comparable to the Motorola HT1250. However, the F4061 can be upgraded to digital operation when desired. This provide call privacy (even between users on the same system), better channel efficiency (up to 3 calls per single 25 kHz channel can be conducted simultaneously), better audio, extended battery life, and HIPAA compliance. See www.falcondirect.com/digital/f3061prices for additional information.
There is a third type of on-site 2-way communicator that requires no FCC operating license and offers the immediate benefits of digital technology (encrypted voice being a major benefit to healthcare users). The Motorola DTR540 might best be described as a Nextel without monthly airtime charges. Functionally, the DTR650 operates similar to a typical Nextel with the exception that it has unlimited group calling in addition to individual calling in the direct connect mode. Unlike Nextel, the DTR is specifically for on-site use and no telephone capability is available.
Unlike our other personal 2-way radios, the DTR650 is not compatible with other radios or with our base station, repeater, access control or notification systems. However, the DTR650 has some compelling features that make if a favorite by an increasing number of industrial users.
More and more users are selecting the DTR650 for a number of reasons such as extra high audio output (twice the loudness of most other radios). The battery life is about twice that of most commercial radios and the DTR650 is only one of a few radios with selectable audible or vibrate alert. It even has a built in voice mail system! We are not permitted to advertise prices on this product but we can tell you that it is comparably priced with a Motorola CP200 and only slightly more than the HYT TC-610 shown above. Give us a call at 800.489.2611 for pricing. You are in for a very pleasant surprise! In the meantime, additional information is available at www.falcondirect.com/DTR. Other digital radios include the water submersible ICOM F70 and F80 for use on P25 digital systems as well as the Motorola MotoTRBO digital radio system. Additional information is available by giving us a call at 800.489.2611 or on the web at www.falcondirect.com/digital.
